The Wrath of God Revealed
January 2, 2024
Romans 1:18, “For the wrath of God is revealed against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness.”
Let me ask you a question. Do you fear God? The Bible says that “The beginning of wisdom is the fear of the Lord.”
From these two verses, we get these truths – God can get angry and we are wise to fear Him.
What is God angry about? What did He reveal His wrath against?
The answer is right there in verse 1:18 of Romans: He is angry because of mankind’s ungodliness and unrighteousness.
You may think He is talking about all those other people who ignore God’s law and willfully sin against Him – doing and thinking sinful and ungodly things: murder, rape, cheating, lying, robbing, stealing, etc.
The truth is: He is talking about all of us. You see the Bible says, “All have sinned and come short of the glory of God,” “There is none righteous – no not one,” and “All we like sheep have gone astray, each to his own way.”
The wrath of God spoken of above is against all of us because at times we all have behaved in ungodly and unrighteous ways.
So, what does scripture say is due us for our ungodly and unrighteous behavior? Listen to what it says:
The soul that sinneth, it shall die
The wages of sin is death
The guilty in no wise shall go unpunished
Whatsoever a man soweth he shall reap
And we know that the judgment of God rightly falls on those who practice such things (sin)
Because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath
To those who are selfishly ambitious and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, [you are storing up for yourself] wrath and indignation
There will be tribulation and distress for every soul of man who does evil
God is angry with us because, even though He gave us a conscience to know right from wrong, we all have violated that conscience and have done what we knew was wrong. God is right to be angry with us, and He revealed that wrath against all humanity.
Wait, you say He has already revealed His wrath? Yes, that’s what the Bible says. Does that mean in some sense – maybe in the future – God has come down on us with the punishment we are due? Do we have any hope or is our fate as sinners sealed – already scheduled for God’s wrath?
Oh, my friend, you won’t believe how God did reveal His wrath! Can you imagine how much wrath God had stored up against ALL the sins of ALL mankind? It was so enormous that He had compassion on us all and did something unimaginable.
He revealed His wrath – not by giving us the punishment we deserved, but by taking the punishment Himself when Jesus suffered and died on the cross. The wrath of God was revealed by crucifying Christ on the Cross. As the song says, “Amazing love, how can it be, that Thou my God wouldst die for me.?”
Yes, God so loved us and had mercy on us that He did what John 3:16 says: “For God so loved the world, He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life.”
God suffered and died in our place so that we would not have to. He did it so that we could be forgiven of our sins – they were paid for by God Himself.
This is a wonderful and truly amazing truth …..and, if you have not realized this before, it may take a moment to sink in.
Now that you understand this wonderful truth, the question is “What now? Do I need to do anything at all?”
The Bible says “Yes”. Though God has paid for your sins as a gift to you, you have to receive that gift. And you do that by believing in or trusting in what God did for you in an attitude of repentance. Repentance means you choose to stop sinning and start living the way God wants you to. The moment you trust in what Jesus did for you in an attitude of repentance, you are saved, forgiven of your sins, and have peace with God – now knowing that when you die you will go to heaven to be with God. The rest of your life will be spent with an attitude of thanking God for what Jesus did on the cross for you.
