Romans 6 – Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound?

Romans 6' primary thrust is to condemn the attitude of license, meaning the attitude that since God’s grace is greater than any amount of sin, why not sin all you want? Satan uses the argument of license to condemn the logic of Christianity in the mind of the non-believer and tries to tempt a believer to sin because God has saved him no matter how much he sins.

Thus, knowing God is at work in us as we choose to please Him by obeying Him and not sinning and knowing we have the victory, we joyfully serve Him enduring the conflict within and becoming more and more like Christ until He takes us home.

These verses at best take careful reading to understand and at worst have resulted in misunderstanding to the extent of making God the author of sin. Erroneous teaching and preaching based on misunderstanding not only exists but is prevalent in some evangelical churches today. To help the reader correctly understand these verses, I will take them a few at a time and carefully look at their meaning. Let me quote all of the text from the NASB translation then comment,

By grace you have been saved through faith – not as a result of good works

In Ephesians 2:1-9, Paul stresses the truths that in his natural state man is “dead in his trespasses and sins” and that forgiveness of sin and reconciliation with God is by God’s grace toward mankind. It is God’s unmerited favor towards man, not by anything man can do to earn it.
