A Look at Other Major Religions/Worldviews and a Comparison to Christianity
January 2, 2024
I wanted to call your attention to a recent update to the body of this website. My grandson Andrew, after reading through it suggested I add a section addressing the question, “With various religions, how does a person know which one is true?” So, I decided to add that question to the Dealing with Difficult Questions section of this website. This could be a huge undertaking, so I chose to reduce it in a couple of ways. First, all religions essentially fall into three categories – belief in one god (monotheistic), god is in all life (pan-theistic), and there is no god (atheistic). So, I look at the beliefs of the largest of each of these types and compare them to Christianity. Second, I use a work done by Abdu H. Murray, called Grand Central Question, to get to the key question for each religion (which he calls that religion’s grand central question). I follow Murray’s approach by seeing how Christianity answers the other religions’ grand central question. There is still a large amount of information espousing each religion’s beliefs, but this approach reduces the comparison to a manageable level.
To pique your interest, the grand central question for pantheists (Hindus and Buddhists) is “How does one escape the pain and suffering of life?” The atheist’s question is “How is there objective meaning in life and is there objective morality?” For Islam, the largest monotheistic religion outside of Christianity, the question is, “How is God great and what makes him great?” I invite you to go to Difficult Question # 3 and check out this comparison of religions.
